WHAT IS TIMBER + TWILIGHT?
Timber and Twilight is a Denver-based photography brand specializing in cinematic nighttime portraits of families and the places they call home.
The brand is operated by professional photographer Kim Sidwell, who brings more than 20 years of experience in commercial product photography, event photography, and portraiture to each commission.
The concept grew out of Kim’s longstanding interest in nighttime photography, long exposures, and light painting. It began with Kim annoying her friends on camping trips in the Rocky Mountains with cameras, equipment, tripods, and constant shutter clicking. During the COVID lockdowns, that interest evolved into something new: cinematic family portraits created in front of the homes that provide us with warmth and safety.
With more time at home and fewer opportunities to work as usual, she began experimenting with ways to incorporate people and their homes into these scenes. It offered a creative outlet and a way to keep photographing people while maintaining the physical distance required at the time. What began as a fun photographic experiment eventually developed into a fully realized photography service.
These photographs are not AI-generated. Each image is created outdoors after dark through a carefully coordinated process involving long exposures, handheld flashlight light painting, supplemental flash photography, and digital compositing. Kim physically lights the home, landscape, and surrounding details with a handheld flashlight, photographs the family using portable speedlights, and finally brings dozens or even hundreds of individual photographs together in post-production to create one finished piece of photographic art.
The home plays an important role in every photograph. Much like the campfires in Kim’s earlier images, the home becomes a focal point in the darkness: a source of warmth, light, and familiarity. Rather than simply serving as a backdrop, the home becomes part of the portrait itself.
Timber and Twilight grew from a desire to combine technical experimentation with the storytelling possibilities of portrait photography. Each commission is individually produced, with the lighting, composition, and final image shaped around the unique character of the property and the people who live there.
FAQ's
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Portrait commissions start at $600, with most clients investing between $800 and $1,200. Each commission is individually priced based on the property size, location, number of people and production requirements. Please fill out an estimate request form below for current rates and availability!
HOW LONG DOES A SESSION TAKE?
Sessions typically take 1.5 – 3.5 hours. Active participation is only needed for approximately 20–30 minutes, depending on the number of people, but clients will need to be available for the duration of the shoot to turn interior lights on or off as needed and provide restroom access during the session.
ARE PRINTS INCLUDED?
No. This isn't a standard family portraiture package, as every client has different needs. Your session includes the finished, high-resolution digital image file with an image release for personal printing and online usage. You can print it through any lab you choose or order professional prints directly through our website.
WHEN SHOULD I SCHEDULE MY SESSION?
Sessions are available year-round and must take place after sunset. Spring, summer, and fall offer the most variety in foliage, while winter works particularly well for holiday themes, evergreen landscapes and distinctive architecture. Deciduous trees may be best avoided in winter, when bare branches can make the surrounding landscape appear sparse.
